Have you ever wondered if you communicate correctly? or

Have you ever thought that your communication skills need improvement?

This article is for people who feel that their communication skills may need revamping because real effective personal communication is much more challenging than people think.

Based on my personal experience, I came up with these 6 simple tips for effective communication. Using these tips regularly, anybody can start revamping their communication skills.

1. Be clear by using simple words. But at any cost avoid oversimplification.

2. Know your audience, their history, experience and level of understanding, to avoid under- or over-explaining.

3. To make sure everyone is on the same page, ask the other person to rephrase your point/statement in his/her words and/or ask follow-up question(s).

4. Be a sincere listener by giving others 100% of your undivided attention and involving genuinely. If necessary, ask for clarification or to elaborate to get a better understanding.

5. Understand others and engage in conversation : With the person you are speaking to, it should never feel like a speech. Try to understand the other person’s perspective by simply providing moral support and may be contribute by saying what is also relevant to them. Conversation needs to be empathic and relevant. Interrupting others and oversharing are big no-no’s in a conversation.

6. Make a conscious effort to improve your body language. According to researchers 55% of non-verbal communication accounts for body language. It is unfortunate that many people judge others based on their body language. Some body postures are seen in negative and some in positive light. Figure out what and how you can improve your own body language and make an action plan to improve your non-verbal communication. Turn your negative body language into a positive one.

Once applied consistently these tips can really help to become an effective communicator.
